Four new free mental health centres will open in the northern suburbs of the Greater Brisbane area by July next year.

Federal Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Assistant Minister Emma McBride said the walk-in centres would be established in Caboolture, Redcliffe, Strathpine and the inner-northern Brisbane suburb of Lutwyche.

Ms McBride said the Medicare Mental Health Centres would provide on-the-spot support, assessment, and care for people in distress or with ongoing mental health care needs.

She said they would be staffed by a multidisciplinary care team, including mental health social workers, nurses and peer support and would provide wrap-around support and care across extended hours.

“To respond to growing need, the Government is rolling out 61 Medicare Mental Health Centres across the country, including 19 in Queensland.”

Ms McBride said an additional $29.9 million would be invested to provide access to psychologists and psychiatrists on call for every centre.

She said the centres would be co-funded, with the Federal Government contributing $5.3 and the Queensland Government contributing $3.2 million towards commissioning and operating the services, which were expected to be opened by July, 2025.
