The success of a support teacher program will see it extended into every classroom in an Ipswich school next year.
St Ann’s School Redbank Plains has embraced the Support Teachers – Pedagogy and Learning (PALs) concept, where qualified teachers provide differentiated learning support tailored to student needs, enabling classroom teachers to focus on teaching.
Principal of the Brisbane Catholic Education school Sonny Smith said the introduction of PALs for every year level in 2025 would ensure students enjoyed consistency and continuity as their PALs progressed alongside them through the Year levels.
Mr Smith said PALs played a crucial role in the educational ecosystem at St Ann’s School.
“Not only do the PALs provide differentiated learning support for our students, but their role is also vital in providing our teachers the freedom to shine in what they do best – teaching,” he said.
“The PAL role also offers a compelling pathway to school leadership for those educators looking for the next step in their career.”
Mr Smith said becoming a PAL was a great way to learn how to build capacity within a team, skills which were needed in school leadership and Principalship.
St Ann’s School’s PAL Siobhan Molloy said being able to stay with students as they journeyed through school was a real advantage.
“Within the PAL role we have unique insights on (a) student’s individual strengths and needs,” Ms Molloy said.
“This continuity allows us to provide tailored support throughout a student’s education, making it easier for their teacher to understand and enhance their learning journey.”
Fellow PAL Karen Oudyn said taking on responsibilities and guiding her peers had significantly boosted her self-confidence and communication skills.
“This role has refined my leadership style, teaching me the importance of leading with patience, inclusivity, and encouragement,” Ms Oudyn said.
St Ann’s School is currently recruiting for a PAL to commence in 2025.
