A new Brisbane school principal is bringing a touch of country to her new city role.

After being part of one of Brisbane Catholic Education‘s (BCE) most regional schools for six years, Bec O’Connor now leads St Peter Chanel Primary School The Gap.

Ms O’Connor said her time at St Joseph’s Primary School Gayndah has prepared her well for the role in Brisbane’s leafy north-western suburbs.

“There’s something to be learned from the warmth and closeness of country towns, an invaluable lesson in community that I carry forward into my new role at The Gap,” Ms O’Connor said.

“Although Brisbane is vastly different to Gayndah, at the end of the day my mission will be the same, to nurture not only the intellect but also the spirit of every one of my students at my new school.”

Ms O’Connor said her upbring through the BCE system, where she completed 12 years of school at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and St John Fisher College Bracken Ridge also shaped her career.

“I had the best years at school,” she said.

“I became an educator because I wanted to give back to a system that gave so much to me.”

She said her education provided her with a strong sense of belonging.

“I am committed to recreating this profound feeling for every one of my students, whether it be in a small town or a big city.”

Ms O’Connor said as a principal she had the opportunity to create an exciting school culture and environment for future leaders.
