Students in a Redbank Plains school, south-west of Brisbane, are honing their esports skills and challenging all-comers.
St Ann’s School, in the Ipswich suburb, has established a state-of the-art esports room, five years after being opened by Brisbane Catholic Education.
Principal Sonny Smith said the room would be a hub of skill development for students.
Mr Smith said the new gaming arena was equipped with the latest technology, smart televisions, a sleek floor for robotics tournaments, podcast equipment, and Nintendo Switch gaming stations.
He said the school was now gearing up for an esports event in Semester 2 of this year.
“At the heart of the thrill is our highly anticipated Mario Kart Challenge, where our students will go head-to-head with competitors from other local schools in an epic clash of speed and skill,” Mr Smith said.
“Students will form teams, strategise by studying maps of the racetracks, and uncover game-changing shortcuts to dominate the competition.”
Mr Smith said the esports room would connect students with the skills they needed for the future.
“We are preparing our students for future careers in an evolving digital landscape,” he said.
“It’s not just gaming. We are creating pathways for students to develop essential skills in teamwork, strategy, technology, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, which are crucial for success in many fields.”
