Global fashion maverick Iris van Herpen has inspired a student exhibition in the Brisbane CBD.

Final year QUT fashion students channelled the Dutch designer for the installation at the Brisbane Quarter in George Street, on show until August 27.

The Shape of Water is open to the public at no cost, and features work created under the guidance of QUT School of Design lecturer Lydia Pearson and pays homage to van Herpen’s sculptural silhouettes.

Ms Pearson said van Herpen’s eclectic and ethereal creations have graced the likes of Beyonce, JLo, Bjork, Lady Gaga and an assortment of Met Gala glitterati and were currently on show at the Gallery of Modern Art.

She said the students had taken their cue from van Herpen’s nature-inspired pieces and use of recycled and novel materials, techniques and art in highly original ways.

“The students’ brief was that 50 percent of each garment must include recycled or second-hand materials. They have put their heart and souls into these designs,” she said.
