Beloved fairytale classic Peter and the Wolf comes to life with Queensland Ballet and a live symphony orchestra designed to captivate children and families during the school holidays.
The performance is part of Queensland Ballet’s My First Ballet Series, with Peter and the Wolf a perfect introduction to the worlds of ballet and orchestral music.
Each character will be brought to life by a different orchestral instrument with Queensland Conservatorium musicians live on stage.
Choreographer Greg Horsman said the production offered a powerful learning opportunity for children.
“Our young audiences will be able to connect the sound of each instrument to the characters they see in stage,” Mr Horsman said.
“The clarinet becomes the cat, the oboe becomes the duck, and Peter is brought to life through the string section.
“It’s a joyful, educational experience that inspires a lifelong love of both music and dance.”
Children aged 2-5 and 6-12 can explore the story, characters, and ballet moves from the production in an interactive workshop offered by Queensland Ballet.
There will also be a special post-show Q&A session with Queensland Ballet artists and dancers after the final performance on July 5.
The ballet will be narrated by Hugh Parker, with sets and costumes by Josh McIntosh and Nolene Hill, along with lighting by Ben Hughes.
Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Ivan Gil-Ortega said Greg Horsman’s playful choreography offered a fresh and engaging take on the beloved story, while honouring the original 1960s version choreographed by Queensland Ballet founder Charles Lisner.
Peter and the Wolf will run from June 27 – July 5 at the Talbot Theatre, Thomas Dixon Centre. The workshops will need to be pre-booked. For tickets to the ballet and workshops click here.
