Superman’s alter-ego is lurking in a backyard on the Sunshine Coast, as is one gifted with the Force.

In a novel way to encourage ratepayers to renew their pet registrations, Sunshine Coast Council has provided an insight into the wide and varied names for the region’s pets.

While Council says Bella is the most popular name for dogs and Luna rules in the cat world, other pet owners are more out of this world with the Kryptonite-phobic, mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent and Star Wars icon Obi Wan among the Sunshine Coast’s resident animal companions.

Other notable monikers included Albert Einstein, Black Jack and Frank the Tank, with sweeter and joyful options such as Sunflower, Sprinkle Joy, Suzie Cinnamon Toast and Mango Popcorn also among the pet-based nomenclature.

Sunshine Coast Council Service Excellence Portfolio Councillor Christian Dickson said annual pet registration renewals had been sent out to owners of the 66,647 cats and dogs registered on the Sunshine Coast.

Cr Dickson said pet registration was important as it helped Council reunite lost pets with their owners.

He said it also provided funding for services such as education programs to promote responsible pet ownership, care of lost animals and animal management.

“And it is also required by law.”

Cr Dickson said Council anticipated there were pets that were not registered, particularly with so many new residents moving to the Sunshine Coast.

He said significant discounts applied for de-sexed and micro-chipped pets.
