Federal laws covering aviation and maritime security are being reviewed as terrorism makes room for new threats to our transport infrastructure.
The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security this week began a review into the Transport Security Amendment (Security of Australia’s Transport Sector) Bill, which seeks to amend the Aviation Transport Security and Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Acts.
Committee Chair Senator Raff Ciccone said these laws were introduced when terrorism was the biggest danger to transport critical infrastructure.
“But it’s time to also consider managing other threats,” Senator Ciccone said.
“The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities with supply chains (and) malicious cyber activity can bring airports to a halt.”
He said the inquiry was an important opportunity to make sure any changes to two Acts helped Government and industry keep Australia’s seas and skies safe, secure, and resilient.
Submissions to the enquiry close on February 13.
