More than $30 million is being invested to grow a Queensland Police Service’s (QPS) rapid response unit to almost 60 officers.

Premier David Crisafulli said the QPS State Flying Squad would grow from 17 to 58 specialist officers that could be deployed to high-risk areas and strategically target Queensland’s worst offenders.

Premier Crisafulli said $32.4 million would be committed over five years to the squad, which would absorb officers currently attached to operations including Taskforce Guardian and Operation Whiskey Legion.

“This squad will strike at the heart of crime and help restore community safety across the state,” he said.

QPS Deputy Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon said the investment strengthened targeted operations capability.

“(It) ensures we have resources needed to respond quickly and effectively to crime hotspots across Queensland,” Deputy Commissioner Scanlon said,
