A new and expanded emergency department will be delivered in the second stage of a $710m Ipswich Hospital expansion.

With Stage 1 of the expansion, which included a new 64-bed Mental Health Acute Impatient Service, nearing completion, Stage 2 work has begun and will include a purpose-built, multi-storey acute services building with 200 new beds and additional operating theatres, to complement the new emergency department.

There will also be a satellite medical imaging service and a central sterilisation service, as well as shell spaces for future development.

Demolition of the former mental health building and the detailed design for Stage 2 is under way, with early works to begin in April, paving the way for the main construction phase later this year.

The project is expected to be completed by late 2027.
