Brisbane’s newest river crossing will open on December 15, when the Kangaroo Point Bridge welcomes its first pedestrians.
A Brisbane City Council statement said, weather permitting, the green bridge would open in just over two months.
It said the finishing touches to the bridge were being completed, including burying a time capsule, earmarked to be opened in 50 years.
“The time capsule includes samples of materials the bridge is made from, memoirs of those who worked on the bridge and predictions of what Brisbane will look like in 50 years imagined by New Farm State School students,” the statement said.
Council said the bridge would cut travel times by up to 50 percent for some bridge users, saving pedestrians up to 30 minutes when walking from both Kangaroo Point and The Gabba to the CBD.
It said as part of the project, new walking and riding connections from the bridge landing at Scott Street through to Main Street and Deakin Street in Kangaroo Point had been created.
“More than just a bridge project, the Kangaroo Point Bridge will become a must-visit destination for residents and visitors and will provide the perfect way for residents to explore our river city during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.”
