Schools have come a long way since CD players and a shared television meant “well-resourced”.

New Our Lady of the Way School principal Aleishia Connellan has been part of that journey in her career which has spanned more than 30 years.

Starting at the Brisbane Catholic Education school in Petrie earlier this year, Ms Connellan said has seen many changes in her time as an educator.

She said significant changes included the move to a national curriculum and introduction of NAPLAN testing.

“’Well-resourced meant CD players and one television shared among numerous classrooms, a far cry from the access to powerful devices that teachers and students have today,” she said.

“I remember the excitement of students using the first Apple computer in the school, it was mind blowing at the time.”

Ms Connellan said she was enthusiastic about fostering authentic connections with students and staff.

“Every child has the right to a high-quality education and qualified, committed teachers who advocate for them daily.

“I am passionate about supporting all students to develop their foundational reading and writing skills.”

She said good teachers were lifelong learners and understood that teaching was relational and required consistent demonstrations of compassion and patience.

“They know that good teaching and learning practices combined with understanding how their students learn creates engaging lesson delivery where every child can and will learn.”
