A training program in the Northern Territory is creating a skilled local workforce to counter the tyranny of distance in Australia’s Top End.

The program, run by Charles Darwin University (CDU) TAFE, offers people training in some of the skills that would otherwise require a contractor to travel hundreds of kilometers to provide services costing thousands of dollars.

CDU TAFE Deputy Chief Executive Kelly McCarthy the program delivered in-community training, expanding On Country skills at seven remote Community Hubs that serviced more than 20 remote communities.

Ms McCarthy said the training was fit for purpose based on the needs of each remote community, focusing on essential skills needed for current community-based projects and filling gaps across several industries including Community Services, Construction and Civil Construction.

She said through the program CDU was able to not only address skills shortages in remote communities, but empower locals.

“This training has increased access to services and skills that are often either not available or come at high costs to service providers or community members.”

Ms McCarthy said skills taught ranged from mechanical maintenance, operating small plant and equipment, conducting earthworks and providing care for an aging population.
