Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef will benefit from 30 sweaty men running around a rugby field multiple times in the middle of next year.

The British & Irish Lions and Rugby Australia have announced the Great Barrier Reef Foundation as their chosen Global Charity Partner for a nine-match tour around Australia, which kicks off in June, and includes three games against the Wallabies.

CEO of The British & Irish Lions Ben Calveley said by joining forces with Rugby Australia they could raise awareness around the conservation and protection of the Reef.

“Our ambition is to make sure that this tour is the greatest ever – and that means making an impact both on and off the pitch,” Mr Calvely said.

Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh said the collaboration embodied a commitment to not only celebrate rugby, but also to advocate for environmental stewardship.

“We hope to inspire fans to join us in protecting our natural wonder,” Mr Waugh said.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation Managing Director Anna Marsden said it was an extraordinary opportunity to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect and restore Queensland’s coral reefs.

Ms Marsden said the partnership would focus on engaging fans through awareness campaigns, educational experiences and fundraising opportunities during the tour.
