Australians are being urged to create the nation’s largest digital cheer as the country marks eight years to go before the start of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee President Andrew Liveris said communities from across the country were being encouraged to record the quintessential Australian shout-out to athletes: ‘Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! – Oi! Oi! Oi!’.
Mr Liveris said the nationwide cheer was an easy and fun way for all Australians to also get involved in Paris 2024.
“To embrace our Australian love of sport, and to be part of the nationwide cheer, all you need to do is film your best and loudest cheer, post it to Facebook, Instagram or TikTok and tag your video #brisbane2032,” he said.
“We’re encouraging anyone and everyone to get involved, school kids, sports clubs, businesses, community groups. Whoever you are, wherever you are, let’s create the loudest digital Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! cheer on record.”
Mr Liveris said messages would be collated as one nationwide cheer and shared across Brisbane 2032’s social channels, together with the Australian athletes in Paris.
Olympic champion Emily Seebohm has already recorded her Aussie catch cry and encouraged all Australians to do the same.
“Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! – Oi! Oi! Oi! has always been inspiring to hear poolside when representing Australia,” Ms Seebohm said.
First time Paralympian, wheelchair basketballer Eithen Leard, hoped as many Australians as possible would get behind their athletes in Paris, cheering them on whenever and wherever possible.
“As Aussies, we love our sport and we support one another, especially when it comes to the Olympics and Paralympics,” Mr Leard said.
“This is an opportunity to unite as a nation in a simple but effective way in a Games year, igniting that Aussie pride we are known and loved for around the world.”
Mr Liveris said the launch of the nationwide cheer on Brisbane 2032’s own 8 years to go milestone would also act as a worldwide invitation ahead of 2032.
“With eight years’ to go until our very own Games, now is the time to raise our voice as one and let everyone know that Brisbane, Queensland and Australia are getting ready to host the world’s biggest sporting event in 2032,” he said.
