Distracted shoppers are driving risky online purchasing practices, which are up almost 10 percent in a year.
Research from payment platform PayPal found in an attempt to save time, 73 percent of Australians admitted to being “distracted shoppers”, potentially making them easier targets for scammers.
PayPal Consumer Shopping Expert Bonnie Brady said risky shopping practices, such as multitasking while making online purchases, was up nine percent from last year.
Ms Brady said the research found 43 percent of Aussies admitted to shopping online while watching TV or streaming video.
She said 35 percent admitted shopping while at the office or working from home, with 29 percent clicking while on public transport or in a car and 25 percent hopping online while being physically in store.
“During this busy time, it’s tempting to multitask – but with it comes increased risk.”
Ms Brady said according to the Australian Signals Directorate, online shopping fraud was the second most reported type of fraud in Australia after identity fraud.
She said Australians should pay close attention when shopping online as sales periods invited new opportunities for scammers.
“One of the biggest risks of online shopping is encountering fake online stores, set up by fraudsters to steal money or personal information.
“In this day of AI, these fake retail sites can look very convincing. We all love the online sales and they’re a great way to get a deal, but it’s important for Australians to stay focused and ensure they’re buying from legitimate retailers.”
