Australian dads can expect lottery and concert tickets and homewares on Father’s Day this Sunday.
Analysis of CommBank data, comparing spending habits before Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, showed dads were 16 percent more likely to receive lottery tickets than mums on their annual day.
CommBank Executive General Manager Small Business Banking Rebecca Warren said the family patriarch was also more likely to receive concert tickets (+13 percent) and homewares (+11 percent) than mums.
Ms Warren said dads hoping for clothing, eating out, jewellery and flowers may be disappointed.
“Unsurprisingly, spending on beauty spas leading up Father’s Day was almost half of what it was in the lead up to Mother’s Day, and expenditure on chocolates and confectionary is also lower (-30 percent).
“Meanwhile, with flowers one of the more popular gifts for mums, Australians spent 241 percent less at florists in the week leading up to Father’s Day versus Mother’s Day last year,” Ms Warren said.
She said the data suggested that, overall, people spent marginally less on their dads than their mums (-3 percent), however there were clear indicators as to where the money would be spent this week, based on trends seen in previous years.
“The spend data provides valuable insights for small businesses seeking to take advantage of a big spending event like Father’s Day.
“Father’s Day kicks off a busy season for Australian small businesses as we head into the last few months of the year. It’s a good time to think about maximising these spending events, promotion opportunities and ways to provide outstanding customer service at a crucial time.”
