Major film studio Shadowbox will build a state-of-the-art production studio on the Gold Coast.
City of Gold Coast today backed the project, to be developed on city-owned land in Yatala.
Mayor Tom Tate said the major studio developer and operator, with locations in the London and Atlanta metro areas, planned to build up to 10 sound stages, workshops, office spaces, a backlot, and training facilities, on the site.
Mayor Tate said it was expected the new film studio could contribute approximately $195 million towards the economy each year once complete and generate 1000 jobs during construction, with 3400 direct and indirect jobs once both phases were operational.
He said negotiations would now commence with Shadowbox Studios on specific arrangements of the deal, which will included a development lease to permit develop of the 22ha site, followed by a long-term operational lease.
“This is such an exciting opportunity for the Gold Coast and will cement our position as one of the most sought-after filming destinations in Australia,” Mayor Tom Tate said.
Shadowbox Studios Chief Executive Officer Peter Rumbold said phase 1 of the proposal included up to 6 sound stages, workshop, office building, backlot and outdoor filming space that were expected to be operational in 2028.
Mr Rumbold said a phase 2 future expansion, which would depend on market demand, may include an additional four sound stages, workshop and office space.
