Queenslanders will be prompted to become organ donors when they renew their driver’s licence, in an attempt to lift one of the lowest levels of organ donor registration in the county.
Health Minister Shannon Fentiman said Queensland was the first State to provide the organ donation link through the Transport and Main Roads online portal.
Minister Fentiman said Queensland, at 31 percent, had the fourth lowest rate of organ donor registration in the country.
She said leading the nation for organ donation was South Australia at 73 percent, second was Tasmania at 48 percent, with New South Wales at 41 percent.
“Research shows that eight in 10 Queenslanders are in favour of organ donation, but only three in 10 are registered donors.”
Minister Fentiman said the Government had joined forces with DonateLife, the national organ and tissue authority, to launch the new feature on the TMR license renewals and vehicle registration webpages that promoted registering your donor status.
She said there has been 640 registrations since it went live less than a week ago.
“For the first time, Queenslanders can choose to click a link directly to the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR) website from the TMR online portal to register as organ and tissue donors when renewing their licence or registering a vehicle online.
“With almost four million drivers renewing licenses and paying vehicle registrations online each year, thousands more Queenslanders are expected to access the donor link and complete their registration, which takes less than one minute,” Minister Fentiman said.
