Australian logistics operation Brambles is the world’s fourth most sustainable company, according to TIME magazine.
The publication teamed with data firm Statista to create the 2024 list which assessed all global companies on their public commitments to the environment and the follow-through on those pledges.
TIME said companies at the top of the list had signed on to some of the most respected climate programs, including the 1.5°C target from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and received high scores from CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project).
It said companies were also assessed on their Scope 1 (directly caused by company) and Scope 2 (indirectly created by purchasing power) emissions, energy consumption relative to company size, emissions reductions in 2021 and 2022, proportion of renewable energy used by the company’s operations and whether companies had incorporated sustainability into their business models.
French company Schneider Electric, based in France, topped the list.
Brambles’ Chief Sustainability Officer Juan Jose Freijo said the Brambles led its industry category and was the only company in the Transport, Logistics and Aviation sector to rank in the top 100.
“The high-ranking result for Brambles affirms the critical role of our circular business model and the power of our sustainability program in driving ever more sustainable outcomes across
the supply chain,” Dr Freijo said.
“Our program is designed to create a positive impact beyond our own operations and, together with our partners and customers, we are pursuing a regenerative vision to create a positive impact on business, planet and communities,” he said.
In being placed fourth on the list, Brambles was only bettered by Schneider Electric, Japanese tech company NEC and Italian fashion company Moncler.
It was one of six Australian companies to feature in the top 500, with Transurban (55), the only other local company in the top 100.
Telstra (214), Sims Limited (264), Tabcorp (323) and Dexus (392) where the other Australian companies listed.
