The Tarong West Wind Farm will become the country’s largest publicly owned wind farm with state-owned energy operator Stanwell signing an acquisition agreement.

The acquisition of the 436.5MW project, to be located south-west of Kingaroy, follows recent development approval by the Queensland Government.

Stanwell CEO Michael O’Rourke said the wind farm would bring around 200 construction jobs and hundreds more indirect jobs, as well as 15 operational jobs, to the South Burnett region.

Mr O’Rourke said the project would feature 97 wind turbines and produce enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 230,000 homes.

It would play a critical role in transitioning the organisation’s energy portfolio and bringing Stanwell closer to the goal of having nine to 10GW of large-scale wind and solar capacity by 2035.

“Stanwell now has more than 4000 MW of renewable energy and storage in our portfolio under contract, in development or under construction,” Mr O’Rourke said.

He said a Final Investment Decision was expected in early 2025.
