Laraine Sperling has broken more than 130 years of tradition at one of Australia’s oldest architecture and design firms.

Ms Sperling is the new CEO at Buchan, becoming the first woman to lead the firm, which has studios in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Auckland, in its 135-year history.

Buchan Director and Chair Phil Schoutrop said Ms Sperling had been with Buchan since 2021, most recently in the role of Chief Strategy Officer.

“She has been instrumental in driving cultural change and transitioning the firm from a regionally managed business to a sector-focused model,” Mr Schoutrop said.

“A key achievement has been a brand refresh to reflect Buchan’s values and effectively communicate its strength in urban design and precincts.”

He said Ms Sperling’s appointment was the culmination of a 30-year career in the built environment.

“She has extensive experience in senior roles within multi-disciplinary, international design firms, in addition to client-side roles with mixed-use global developers.

“Her experience gives her a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in an industry that is constantly under pressure from shifting market conditions.”

Ms Sperling said she would continue to have a strong focus on building the firm’s profile, growing strategic alliances and client partnerships.

“The industry is going through an era of profound change, defined by technological advances, climate imperatives and rising construction costs,” she said.

“My priorities are to support our team to pursue design excellence while ensuring the firm remains financially strong and resilient.”
