A former Queensland regional Mayor is the new chair of the Queensland Government Grants Commission.

State Local Government Minister Ann Leahy said former Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi would take on the lead role at the Commission, while former Mayors Jane McNamara, Peter Scott and Elvie Sandow would serve as members for three-year terms.

Minister Leahy said the independent Commission played a vital role in providing advice on the distribution of Commonwealth Financial Assistance Grants to Queensland’s 77 local governments.

She said the new appointees joined existing Commission deputy chairperson, Joshua Hannan, and member, Jan Pool.

“Our new members are passionate advocates for regional Queensland and their work helps deliver critical infrastructure and services where they’re needed most.

“Vic Pennisi, Jane McNamara, Peter Scott and Elvie Sandow bring a wealth of professional experience and local government expertise to their new roles.”

Minister Leahy said the Commission was more than a funding body – “it’s a bridge between state support and local vision, and these members ensure that bridge is strong, fair and future-focused”.
