Overseas migration was the biggest contributor to population growth in Greater Brisbane in 2024-25.

Around 33,900 overseas migrants settled in the city during the year, compared with natural increase of 13,200 and net migration from within Australia at 11,100.

Australian Bureau of Statistics regional figures released today showed that Perth was the faster growing capital city at 2.4 percent.

Brisbane grew 2.1 percent and Melbourne 2.0 percent.

There was a general decline in the rate of capital city growth with only Darwin (1.7 percent) growing faster than the previous year (1.5 percent).

ABS head of demography Phil Browning said Australia’s capital cities grew by 1.8 percent last financial year, adding 324,700 people.

“This was almost 100,000 people less than in 2023–24, when the capital cities grew by 2.3 percent,” he said.

“Net overseas migration remained the main driver of capital city growth despite falling by 109,400 people compared with the previous year.”

Greater Brisbane increased by 58,200 people while the rest of the state increased by 39,700.

The areas with the largest growth were:

  • Ripley (up by 3100 people) in Ipswich
  • Caloundra West – Baringa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast (2000)
  • Chambers Flat – Logan Reserve (1800) in Logan.

The areas with the highest growth rates were:

  • Ripley (15 percent)
  • Morayfield (15 percent) in Moreton Bay
  • Greenbank – North Maclean (14 percent) in Logan.
