Legendary Australian fashion designer Perri Cutten has died aged 73, according to a statement from the owners of the brand, the Austin Group.

Widely regarded as an iconic figure on the Australian fashion scene, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, Cutten was a contemporary of designers such as Carla Zampatti, Trent Nathan, Covers, Anthea Crawford, George Gross, and Harry Who.

Ms Cutten launched her eponymous label at the age of 31, and eventually opened her first store at Armadale in Melbourne in 1981.

Her label went on to be stocked nationwide at Myer and David Jones.

Her contribution to the fashion industry was not only visionary, but deeply personal – she understood the modern Australian woman and designed with purpose, integrity, and grace, the Austin Group statement said.

“As the founder of the Perri Cutten brand, she built a legacy that has endured for decades, dressing generations of Australian women with style, grace, and confidence.

“Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing and working with her.

“May she be remembered for her pioneering spirit, her impeccable eye, and the enduring mark she left on Australian fashion.”
