Hutchinson Builders have been appointed to work on Caloundra’s new town square that will link the beach with the main street, the Events Centre, New Library and Caloundra Regional Gallery.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said it marked the first step in opening up the city centre – creating a seamless pedestrian link, more green space, improved lighting and pathways, and a more welcoming public precinct.
The early works are expected to take four months, with the removal of the old building currently at 77 Bulcock Street. Once demolition is complete, the site will be made safe and prepared for the next stage of construction.
“This project will unlock a central site to create a more open and leafy people‑focused city centre,” Cr Natoli said.
Member for Caloundra Kendall Hatcher said the appointment of a contractor marked an exciting step forward for Caloundra’s city centre.
“This project is about opening up the heart of Caloundra, creating a greener, more welcoming town square that brings people together and strengthens connections between the city, the beach and local businesses,” Mrs Hatcher said.
Locals and visitors will still have access to Caloundra’s Felicity Park – including to Omrah Avenue, the Library, and The Events Centre.
There will be some changes to Otranto Avenue car park to facilitate works and it will reopen once demolition is complete.
