A new suburban renewal program for the Brisbane suburbs of Chermside and Upper Mt Gravatt is expected to add thousands of new homes to the areas.
The Brisbane City Council said the plan was part of the Council’s “anti-sprawl housing plan”.
The Suburban Renewal Precinct Plans, announced today, are aimed at building more homes sooner in well-serviced locations close to jobs, transport, shops and services.
The Chermside precinct will focus on the Gympie Road corridor between Rode Road and 7th Brigade Park.
The Upper Mt Gravatt precinct will cover a section of Dawson Road, extending through Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road to Newnham Road.
“Upper Mt Gravatt is serviced by turn-up-and-go Brisbane Metro services, while Chermside is supported by high-frequency bus services and has been identified for a future northern metro line in the State’s 2032 delivery plan,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said in a statement.
“The…plan focuses on growing up rather than out, by putting homes near jobs and transport to ease congestion and protect Brisbane’s character and natural areas.”
This work builds on other programs activated in Stones Corner, Wynnum Centre, Mt Gravatt and Alderley.
“The Suburban Renewal Precincts program focuses on transforming under-utilised land into well-planned, mixed-use centres, building on the successful renewal of areas like West End, Teneriffe and New Farm,” Cr Schrinner said.
“These areas demonstrate how well-located renewal can deliver more homes, support local businesses and create strong, connected communities.”
Community consultation will be followed by draft plans which will be released for further community feedback.
