Brisbane’s Metro project has set a new benchmark in sustainability, achieving the highest-ever rating in Queensland.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said under the Infrastructure Sustainability Council’s (ISC) rating scheme, the Metro achieved a score of 82.86, earning a “Leading” rating, which was the top category in the national program.

“This is a landmark achievement for our city as we embrace the transition from public to mass transport,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.

He said the ISC assessment recognised several project factors including:

  • Transforming Victoria Bridge into a dedicated public and active transport bridge.
  • The innovative Adelaide Street tunnel design that preserved surface-level transport corridors and existing trees.
  • Various carbon reduction achievements, including a 77 percent reduction in embodied carbon compared to the original design.
  • More than 222,000 training hours completed for apprenticeships and indigenous peoples.

Lord Mayor Schrinner said the recognition came as the city prepared to open the new Adelaide Street Tunnel for service on Monday, September 29.

He said the tunnel would carry around 1400 bus and metro trips every weekday, reducing congestion in the CBD and creating capacity for Brisbane’s future growth and to celebrate residents were invited to a community open day on Wednesday, September 24.

“With more than 3.6 million trips already taken on the Brisbane Metro, we know this project is central to securing Brisbane’s place as Australia’s lifestyle capital.”
