The world’s brightest high school maths students will descend on the Sunshine Coast next year for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
Australian Maths Trust CEO Nathan Ford said the IMO was the world championship mathematics competition for high school students and would bring the brightest young minds from around the world to Australia, for only the second time, since the competition started in 1959.
Mr Ford said the event, which attracted over 600 students from more than 100 nations, would be held at the Sunshine Coast Convention Centre at Novotel Twin Waters, between July 10 and 20 next year.
“This is huge for mathematics in this country. We are thrilled to be welcoming school students of Year 9 to 12 level, or equivalent, from all over the world,’’ Mr Ford said.
“We also can’t wait to see what our own Australian team, to be announced in May 2025, can achieve on home soil.”
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said events like the IMO strengthened the region, with the area’s knowledge economy one of the high value industries important for growth on the Sunshine Coast.
“This will be a first for the Sunshine Coast – and indeed Queensland,” Mayor Natoli said.
She said competitors and supporters would also have the opportunity to explore the Sunshine Coast Biosphere as part of their visit, with the local community able to get involved though range of volunteer roles, including team guides, exam invigilators and general volunteers.
