The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) has welcomed a new $2 billion Residential Activation Fund which it says will help put more homes in the right places.
PIA Queensland President Sean Cullen said the move would help to create liveable and well-serviced communities.
“This initiative will help bridge the infrastructure funding gap between local governments and developers, facilitating the delivery of major trunk infrastructure that is essential to creating more homes and ensuring sustainable community growth,” he said.
The Queensland Government on the weekend released guidelines for the new Residential Activation Fund.
Round one applications open next month and funding will be available from July 2025.
The fund is designed to help meet the government’s target of one million new homes over the next 20 years.
Half of the Residential Activation Fund will be dedicated to regional Queensland.
Premier David Crisafulli said the fund would fast track essential infrastructure including roads, water, and sewerage.
“Achieving our goal for one million new homes means having generational infrastructure to support our growing communities,” Mr Crisafulli said.
“This vital funding will unlock new housing supply and support the homes for our police, nurses, teachers and doctors.”
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said local governments and developers with projects ready to go, could now start reviewing the criteria and preparing their applications.
“We are working closely with councils and industry to ensure this investment is targeted where it’s needed most,” he said.
