Planning changes have been approved that will pave the way for 26,000 residents to live in Morayfield South, north of Brisbane, in coming decades.

The City of Moreton Bay has adopted amendments to its planning scheme, identifying the infrastructure and environmental corridors needed to support future development.

Morayfield South is the city’s second-largest greenfield growth area and forms part of its strategy to accommodate a projected population of one million people over the next 30 years.

The Morayfield South Structure Plan identifies locations for future roads, schools, local centres, community facilities, parks, recreation areas and environmental corridors.

The planning changes also address city-wide building standards for designated bushfire-prone areas and include a series of administrative updates.

Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the changes would help accommodate increasing demand for housing.

“City of Moreton Bay is growing quickly so it’s important that we unlock new areas for housing to accommodate current and future population growth,” he said.

“Back in 2016, we identified Morayfield South as an emerging community zone in the planning scheme, capable of playing a key role in supporting the City’s future growth.

“That potential is now being realised due to the increased population and development pressure Councils are feeling across South-East Queensland as more people continue to move here.”

Cr Flannery said Morayfield South Structure Plan delivered a clear vision for the future of the area by mapping out environmental corridors and identifying the shops, roads, schools, parks and other required facilities.

The amendments followed community consultation and received State Government approval before being adopted by Council.
