Brisbane’s newest river crossing, between Kangaroo Point and the CBD, opens to the public on Sunday.
Brisbane City Council is hosting an opening event for the new Kangaroo Point Bridge from 8am to 11am, on December 15, which will feature live music and roving entertainment.
A Council statement said it was expected the public would be able to access the bridge from 8.30am, after an opening ceremony at the CBD entrance to the bridge on the corner of Alice and Edward streets, which will mean road closures in the CBD and Kangaroo Point (see below).
“We are expecting a high number of attendees, therefore during the event the bridge will be a ‘shared zone’ for the safety of all users,” it said.
“Cyclists and e-mobility users will be required to go slow and watch out for pedestrians at all times during the event.”
Council said from approximately noon the bridge would operate under normal conditions, with dedicated paths for pedestrians, cyclists and e-mobility users.
As part of the opening celebrations, nearby dining and lifestyle businesses are offering deals, which can be accessed on the Brisbane Sustainability website.
Road closures
The Queensland Department of Transport and Mains Road has advised that lane closures in the Brisbane CBD will be in place to facilitate the official opening of the Kangaroo Point Bridge from 6am to noon on Sunday.
It states a full closure would be in place on Edward St between Margaret St and Alice St, Alice St between Edward St and Albert St and Scott St, Kangaroo Point between Main St and end of street.
“Motorists are advised to follow diversions in place or seek alternate routes to avoid delays. Traffic control will be onsite to assist motorists.”
