Happy 100th birthday “greater” Brisbane.

On this day (October 1) in 1925, a number of authorities across South-East Queensland amalgamated to form a new united Brisbane City Council.

Council’s centenary page on its website records that the new Council was led by Brisbane’s first Lord Mayor, William Jolly, who was elected in February 1925 and elevated to Lord Mayor in 1930.

Brisbane was declared a municipality in 1859, after being part of New South Wales and by the state’s Colonial Secretary, with the first election for the Municipality of Brisbane held on October 13, 1859, where 37 candidates contested nine council positions and John Petrie, a builder and stonemason, was elected as the first Brisbane mayor.

“On October 1, 1925, the “greater” Brisbane Council came into effect as 20 existing local authorities and joint boards amalgamated under the City of Brisbane Act 1924.

“The Council also assumed responsibility for tramway operations, and later water and sewerage supply and cemeteries.”
