The Queensland Parliament has passed laws allowing courts to put GPS trackers on people aged 10 to 17 when they are on bail.

The provision can be used for first offenders in that age group.

The Youth Justice (Electronic Monitoring) Amendment Bill 2025 makes electronic monitoring for youth on bail “permanent and statewide”.

Minister for Youth Justice and Victim Support Laura Gerber said the Bill delivered some of the strongest youth bail monitoring laws in the country.

She said electronic monitoring devices had been found to reduce the likelihood of reoffending by 24 percent.

“By putting more GPS trackers on youth offenders on bail, alongside intensive support services, we will reduce reoffending, have fewer victims of crime and safer communities,” she said.
