Federal National Party Leader Senator Matt Canavan has confirmed he will try to win a seat in the Lower House at the next election.

Senator Canavan told ABC radio this morning that he would nominate for the Central Queensland seat of Capricornia.

The seat has opened up after the incumbent Michelle Landry announced she would not recontest it.

The move means Capricornia will be one of the major battlegrounds between the Coalition and One Nation with One Nation’s party director James Ashby also considering a run at the seat.

Senator Canavan told the ABC that, while leaving the Senate and contesting a House of Representatives seat came with risks, he needed to step up as National Party leader and “be on the front lines with my troops”.

“It falls to me,” he said.  “I just have to be there in the trenches with them.”
