Road closures and changed traffic conditions kick in from 4pm New Year’s Eve as Brisbane prepares to welcome thousands into the city to watch the fireworks display bring in 2025.
Brisbane City Council has advised that from 4pm today (December 31) until 2am on January 1 there would be changes to traffic and parking rules in the Brisbane CBD, South Brisbane and Kangaroo Point, as well as enhanced public transport options.
It stated the following roads would be closed during certain times:
Brisbane City
From 5pm December 31, to 2am January 1:
- North Quay, between Victoria Bridge and Tank Street.
- Adelaide Street, between George Street and North Quay.
- George Street, between Elizabeth Street and Adelaide Street.
- Elizabeth Street, between Riverside Expressway and George Street.
- William Street, between Stephens Lane and Queen Street.
- Riverside Expressway off-ramps to Elizabeth Street.
- George Street entry and egress for Treasury building (access to Treasury carpark maintained via William Street from Margaret Street).
From 7.30pm December 31 to 2am January 1:
- Gardens Point Road under traffic control
South Brisbane and Kangaroo Point
From 4pm December 31 to 2am January 1:
- Grey Street, between Peel Street and Melbourne Street, buses excepted.
- Grey Street between Melbourne Street and Vulture Street.
- Grey Street and Melbourne Street intersection under QPS control
- Hope Street, between Peel Street and Melbourne Street.
- Melbourne Street, between Cordelia Street and Victoria Bridge, bus access will be maintained, detour in place.
- Colchester St, between Ernest Street and Tribune Street.
- Tribune Street, between Merivale Street and Grey Street.
- Fish Lane, between Merivale Street and Grey Street.
- Ernest Street, between Merivale Street and Grey Street.
- Little Dock Street, between Dock Street and Stanley Street.
- Stanley Street, between Little Dock Street and Sidon Street.
- Sidon Street, between Stanley Street & Southbank Parklands.
- Lower River Terrace, Kangaroo Point, between Dock Street and Kangaroo Point cliffs.
- Vulture Street Lane closure between Gladstone Road and Grey Street
Council said changed parking conditions would be in force at several locations across Brisbane from 8pm December 31 until January 1.
It said the following locations will have changed parking signage in place to assist with the road closures associated with New Year’s Eve and urged motorists to check signage before parking.
South Brisbane and Kangaroo Point
- Little Stanley Street.
- Grey Street.
- Tribune Street.
- Ernest Street.
- Glenelg Street.
- Colchester Street.
- Hope Street.
- Stanley Place.
- Fish Lane.
- Russell Street.
- Merivale Street.
- Sidon Street.
- Stanley Street.
- Little Dock Street.
- Dock Street.
- Lower River Terrace
Brisbane City:
- Ann Street.
- Adelaide Street.
- Elizabeth Street.
- William Street.
- Stephens Lane.
- George Street
It also stated that from 4pm December 31 to 2am January 1 there would be changes to access at the following public car parks:
- South Bank Parklands car park will be accessible via Glenelg Street for both entry and exit, exit only via Tribune Street towards Vulture Street.
- Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre car park will be accessible via Merivale Street only (no access to and from Grey Street).
- Treasury Building George Street entrance will be closed. Access to the Treasury Building Carpark via William Street and Margaret Street.
Public transport
Council stated there would be changes to public transport:
- There will be free travel on buses, ferries and trains from 8pm December 31 until 5.30am January 1.
- Buses will operate a normal weekday timetable on New Year’s Eve, with additional services to help people travel in and out of the CBD for the fireworks display.
- CityCats and Ferries will operate as usual, with some changes to frequency. CityCats will run every 15 minutes from 7.30am until about 3am on January 1.
- Additional train services will run after the family fireworks, between 7.45pm and 9.15pm, and the midnight fireworks, between 12.15am and 1.45am.
Viewing spots
Council said Victoria Bridge would not be a viewing point for the fireworks, with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) directing all foot traffic off the bridge and closing it to pedestrians during the fireworks displays.
