Congestion on one of Brisbane’s busiest corridors is expected to ease by the end of this year with the expected completion of major upgrades to Beams Road in the city’s north.

The Federal Government and Brisbane City Council announced this week that the project had reached its halfway point.

The works cover the area between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road. Beams Road carries 20,000 vehicles daily.

Construction is now complete on widening the Cabbage Tree Creek crossing to support four lanes of traffic.

The project also includes new shared paths and a pedestrian underpass at Cabbage Tree Creek, linking directly into the Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway.

The first stage of the Beams Road upgrade, between Lacey Road and Balcara Avenue, was completed in early 2025 and included new traffic signals at Dorville Road, widened road sections and improved shared path connections.

The Beams Road upgrade is jointly funded by the Federal Government, which has committed $50 million, and Brisbane City Council under its Better Roads for Brisbane program.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said the Beams Road upgrade would improve safety, boost capacity and ease congestion for Brisbane’s northside.

“Alongside other major road projects across Brisbane, this upgrade is improving connectivity, reducing congestion and supporting the city’s continued growth,” she said.
