Brisbane’s rollout of green waste recycling bins has begun with 160,000 to be delivered over the next four months.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said eligible households in 11 suburbs would receive their bins this week as Council looked to expand green waste recycling and reduce landfill across the city.

Lord Mayor Schrinner said as part of the rollout renters were now eligible to receive a green bin, but those who already composted or managed green waste differently could opt out.

“There are already 170,000 green bins in use in Brisbane, which is about 50 percent of eligible households,” he said.

Lord Mayor Schrinner said almost 230,000 tonnes of green waste had been recycled via green bin collections since 2019-20, with the new rollout extending the program to all remaining eligible homes not currently using the service.

“This citywide green bin rollout has the potential to divert between 65,000 and 80,000 tonnes of green waste a year.”

He said the rollout would also save ratepayers between $2 million and $3 million in the first year, and up to $32 million over five years as it will help offset the rising cost of the State Government’s waste levy bin tax.

Lord Mayor Schrinner said as part of the rollout, the Waste Utility Charge had been replaced with a Universal Waste Charge.

He said residents who already had a green bin would have no extra costs, while other households will pay an extra $49.52 a year.
