Griffith University has unveiled the architectural plans for its new city campus in the heritage-listed former Treasury Building in Brisbane’s CBD.

The project to restore the 19th-century Italian Renaissance-style building has been designed by COX Architecture and will be renovated by FDC Construction and Fitout.

The space will offer business, IT, and law studies for undergraduate and postgraduate students from 2027, and is expected to accommodate more than 6,000 students and 200 staff by 2028.

It features a renovated interior courtyard with three new 12m skylights, contemporary learning facilities, and a focus on modern study spaces in the historic structure.

There will also be a customised moot court with repurposed early 1900s furniture from Queensland’s old Supreme Court.

COX Architecture Director Kellie Newman said they had re-thought teaching approaches, timetabling and spatial scale to create flexible, modular environments that would respect the building while allowing the University to adapt and grow.

The Treasury Building will feature:

  • Engagement spaces for partners collaborate with Griffith staff and students
  • Library with 24/7 student access
  • Multiple food outlets open to students, staff and the public
  • A student hub including kitchen facilities, vending machines and a food pantry
  • Communal study spaces for students with a focus on collaborative learning
  • Numerous event spaces
  • A financial trading room for business students
  • Moot court for law students
  • Cyber room for IT students
  • End of trip facility
