Housing approvals jumped in September, as the number of apartments planned was more than 50 percent above the number approved the same time last year.
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Head of Construction Statistics Daniel Rossi said the total number of dwellings approved rose 12 percent in the month, to 17,019.
“The rise in total dwellings was driven by a 26 percent rise in private dwellings excluding houses, which followed consecutive falls in July and August,” Mr Rossi said.
“Private sector houses also rose, up 4 per cent, to 9547 dwellings, coming off the back of a 1 per cent fall in August.”
He said private sector house approvals recorded rises across the country, with the largest rise in New South Wales, up 7.8 percent.
“Queensland was the only state to fall, with private sector house approvals down 6.9 percent.”
Mr Rossi said despite the rise in September, house approvals were around the same level as they were this time last year.
He said the private sector dwellings excluding houses rise of 26 percent followed a 3.8 percent fall in August.
“This is 55.2 per cent higher than one year ago.”
