Australia’s unemployment rate rose to 4.1 per cent in June.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data shows the seasonally adjusted rate rose by less than 0.1 percent.

ABS Head of Labour Statistics Bjorn Jarvis said employment rose by around 50,000 people, while the number of unemployed grew by 10,000 people.

He said the participation rate rose to 66.9 percent.

“The participation rate in June was only 0.1 percentage point lower than the historical high of 67.0 per cent in November 2023.

“The employment-to-population ratio rose by 0.1 percentage point to 64.2 percent, which was also close to its historical high of 64.4 per cent in November 2023.”

Mr Jarvis said with both the employment-to-population ratio and participation rate continuing to be high and the continued high level of job vacancies, it suggested the labour market remained relatively tight, despite the unemployment rate being above 4.0 percent since April.

He said seasonally adjusted monthly hours worked rose by 0.8 percent, which was broadly in line with employment.
