Australia’s unemployment is on the rise after being stable for a number of months.
The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 4.3 percent in June.
ABS Head of Labour Statistics Sean Crick said the trend unemployment rate also rose to 4.2 percent, after remaining at 4.1 percent over the previous three months.
Mr Crick said the June increases were driven by a 34,000 increase in the number of unemployed people.
He said employment rose by 2000 people in the month, following a fall of 1000 in May, and was up 2 percent compared to June, 2024.
“Part-time employment grew by 40,000 people, offset by a 38,000 person fall in full-time employment.”
Mr Crick said the employment-to-population ratio remained at 64.2 percent, and the participation rate rose to 67.1 per cent.
He said hours worked fell 0.9 percent in June, following a rise of 1.4 percent in May.
“This month we saw a decrease in full time hours worked, down 1.3 percent, associated with a 0.4 percent fall in full time employees.”
