One of the world’s best young ballerinas will star in the greatest love story of all time – Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo & Juliet – beginning this Friday at QPAC.
At just 18 years old, Ruby Day is Queensland Ballet’s newest artist to take to the stage, having scored the Rudolph Nureyev Foundation’s Best Young Talent Award at the Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland – the ballet world’s most prestigious awards event.
The Mount Gravatt East local began in Queensland Ballet Academy’s Associate Program, progressing through the Academy’s levels, and bypassing the Jette Parker Young Artist program (JPYA) to advance directly from the Pre-Professional Program student (PPP) to Company Artist.
Her first official Queensland Ballet seasons saw her perform last year in audience favourite, The Nutcracker; an experience that set the stage for a dazzling career.
Looking ahead, Ruby is thrilled to be part of the upcoming season of Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo & Juliet, describing it as a dream production.
“Romeo & Juliet is definitely a bucket list ballet. I think the choreography is so precise, and there are so many nuances to it,” Ruby said.
“We’re working with some incredible coaches and répétiteurs that are coming in to keep the ballet alive. It’s very exciting.”
Shakespeare’s legendary tale is set in Renaissance Italy where a young star-crossed couple fall in love amidst violence, passion, and feuding families.
MacMillan’s much-adored Shakespearean ballet is brought to life with passionate choreography, elegant costumes, striking sets, and Sergei Prokofiev’s iconic score played live by Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
The ballet runs until March 29, 2025. For tickets and more information, click here.
