The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has introduced a new warnings map layer in its weather app.

BOM Decision Support Services General Manager Chantal Donnelly said the new layer would provide communities with a clearer view of weather warnings and the areas they applied to during severe weather.

Ms Donnelly said the map layer would include 10 types of weather warnings; coastal hazards, fire weather, flood, hazardous surf, heatwave, marine wind, severe thunderstorms, severe weather, tropical cyclone and tsunami.

“We’re constantly looking to improve our services wherever possible, and we know people already use the BOM Weather app to get valuable information about rain, wind, temperature and warnings quickly and easily,” she said.

“Users can now see active warnings relevant to them, and the areas they apply to, right on the map.”

Ms Donnelly said the new feature was in addition to the other ways of keeping track of warnings in the app.

She said users with warning notifications set up would continue to receive them.

“We encourage everyone to stay up to date with our current warnings and forecasts, especially throughout higher risk weather seasons, and this new function will make it even easier to access simple weather information.”

Ms Donnelly said to access the new functionality, people needed to update or install the latest version of the app.
