Almost 90 percent of Queenslanders hospitalised with the flu this year have not been vaccinated.
The release of the latest statistics, with a month still to go in the flu season, has promoted a renewed call for people to get the free jab.
Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland President Chris Owen said Queensland continued to face a significant surge in influenza infections, with nearly 44,000 laboratory-confirmed cases recorded so far in 2025.
Mr Owen said health authorities and community pharmacies were urging Queenslanders to get vaccinated to protect themselves.
He said the surge in infections, nearly 20 percent higher than last year, had placed significant pressure on the state’s health care system.
“The latest data from Queensland Health reveals that 86 percent of those hospitalised with flu this year were not vaccinated, highlighting the importance of vaccination in preventing severe illness and hospitalisation.
“Flu-related hospital admissions have increased steadily in recent months, contributing to sustained pressure on hospitals and emergency departments across the state.”
Mr Owen said influenza activity typically peaked during the winter months, with August historically one of the highest-risk periods.
He said with flu cases continuing to climb, experts warned that the season was not yet over and that getting vaccinated remained critical for all Queenslanders.
“With flu season expected to continue for at least another month, Queenslanders are strongly encouraged to book their free flu vaccination as soon as possible. Getting vaccinated not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of influenza within the community.”
Mr Owen said free flu vaccinations were available at pharmacies for all Queenslanders aged six months and older.
