A new campaign is driving support for the Dolphins National Rugby League (NRL) side as its looks to make its first finals appearance in the competition.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the Phins for Life campaign told the story of how the Dolphins had become ingrained in the fabric of everyday life in the region. WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW.
Mayor Flannery said the Moreton Bay-based club was on the “cusp of something special” as it faced the remaining rounds of the NRL season.
“With finals fever around the corner, now is the time for our fans to cheer on the Dolphins to a top eight finish. Let’s dare to dream,” he said.
“From humble beginnings in 1947 to the club’s historic entry into the NRL, the Dolphins are an intrinsic part of the story of Moreton Bay and its proud rugby league tradition.
“They’ve grown with us, shaped us and brought us together across generations. The Dolphins belong to us.”
Mayor Flannery said council, which led the charge for the Dolphins to be admitted as the NRL’s 17th team in 2023 and committed $8.5 million to upgrade Kayo Stadium, had extended its partnership with the club until 2026.
“With their promotion to the NRL, we know that the club is worth an estimated $74 million per year to our local economy. That means more jobs, more tourism and more investment in our city,” he said.
“As the team has risen from local heroes to national contenders, City of Moreton Bay has grown into one of Australia’s fastest-emerging urban centres – a shared story of grassroots, grit and growth.”
Mayor Flannery said Phins for Life featured a heartwarming video following the lives of everyday fans: a baby’s first birthday, backyard footy with mates, a hero-inspired haircut, celebrating a try, sharing a cuppa in later years, and heading to a game.
“It’s a touching tribute to how the Dolphins are with us through it all,” Mayor Flannery said.
Dolphins Group Chairman Bob Jones said the club was proud of its strong ties to Moreton Bay.
“Moreton Bay is where this club was founded and we continue to build from strength to strength in the NRL,” Mr Jones said.
“Our fans are among the most passionate in the league and I know they’ll be cheering us on to a top eight finish this season.”
