An alternative route into the Caloundra CBD on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is being constructed to ease traffic congestion on the road to the popular holiday spot.
The Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland Government’s Caloundra Transport Corridor Upgrade is designed to relieve pressure on Caloundra Road.
Work has started on the Omrah Ave to Arthur St section, and the Nicklin Way and Third Ave extension.
The Caloundra and Kawana Way Link roads, and Bells Creek Arterial Rd intersection will also be upgraded, with the design now underway.
In a statement, the government said the upgrades were necessary because during peak times Caloundra’s main roads became “a carpark with major delays, crashes and intersections struggling under growing congestion”.
The work is jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Council.
State Member for Caloundra Kendall Hatcher said the upgrades would make everyday trips faster and safer, and ease pressure on busy intersections.
“Anyone who lives in Caloundra knows congestion has become one of the biggest issues facing our community,” Ms Hatcher said.
“People are tired of sitting in traffic and they want practical solutions. That’s exactly what the Caloundra Congestion Busting Plan is all about.”
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the project would provide lasting benefits for the community while supporting local jobs.
“It’s fantastic to see a project of this scale not only improving our roads but also supporting around 360 jobs during delivery,” she said. “That’s a win for local families, local businesses and the wider Caloundra economy.”
