There will be major Brisbane road and rail closures over the school holidays in April, with a Story Bridge shut down, plus Beenleigh, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast train services suspended, and roads closed for the Tour de Brisbane.
The Story Bridge
The Story Bridge will be fully or partially closed from 9pm on Thursday, April 2 to 5am Monday, April 13, 2026 as part of routine maintenance work.
The bridge carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day, and the works will include the concrete repairs beneath the road surface in the bridge depot, along with inspections and other routine maintenance, according to the Brisbane City Council.
Traffic arrangements include:
- A single southbound lane closure on the Story Bridge from 9pm Thursday April 2 to 9pm Saturday April 11.
- A full bridge closure from 9pm Saturday April 11 to 1pm Sunday April 12, with access maintained for Emergency Services.
- From 1pm Sunday April 12 to 5am Monday April 13, one lane in each direction will be operational.
- All lanes are planned to reopen by 5am Monday April 13.
- During the full closure, detours will direct traffic to the Captain Cook Bridge or the Clem7 tunnel.
- Tolls on the Clem 7 will be waived from 4.30pm to 1pm on Sunday, April 12 during the Tour de Brisbane event.
- Pedestrian, cyclist and scooter access across the bridge will remain open and the Story Bridge Adventure Climb will continue to operate.
The works build on a steady pipeline of upgrades already underway on the Story Bridge as part of a multi-stage restoration program, Brisbane City Council Infrastructure Chair Ryan Murphy said.
More than $80 million has been invested in the first stage of the Story Bridge’s restoration since 2019.
The second stage involved the full replacement of both Story Bridge footpaths, with more than 750 metres of new decking installed using custom-made panels fixed to a locally sourced steel frame.
A detailed business case is being progressed with engineering experts ARUP to explore funding options with the Australian Government for future works on the bridge.
This will map out a long-term restoration program to be delivered over the coming decades as the Story Bridge approaches its 100th birthday.
