The Sunshine Coast Stadium upgrade is among the first Brisbane 2032 venues to be put out for tender.

Expressions of Interests for work on the stadium, in the Kawana Sports Precinct, as well on Cairns’ Barlow Park and new indoor sports centres in Logan and Moreton Bay can now be submitted through the QTenders website.

Queensland Deputy Premier and State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Minister Jarrod Bleijie said the start of the procurement process was possible with the Federal and State Governments reaching a new funding agreement this week.

“This landmark agreement is the beginning of a new partnership that will kick-start the delivery of world-class infrastructure in the 2032 Delivery Plan,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

“As part of that new agreement, upgrades to the Sunshine Coast Stadium are locked in, with locals and visitors set to benefit from generational infrastructure for decades to come.”

He said as part of the Brisbane 2032 Delivery Plan, the Sunshine Coast would see:

  • Upgrades to the Sunshine Coast Stadium in Kawana Sports Precinct.
  • Upgrades to the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre.
  • Transformation of the Maroochydore City Centre with a new Athlete Village, arena and cultural precinct.
  • Delivery of The Wave, a public transport connection to the Sunshine Coast Airport, with direct rail from Beerwah to Birtinya, and metro from Birtinya to the Sunshine Coast airport via Maroochydore.

Deputy Premier Bleijie said, in Far North Queensland, the delivery plan would deliver:

  • Major upgrades to Barlow Park Stadium including a new grandstand with a permanent seating capacity of 5000 to support Cairns attracting major event hosting opportunities like football.
  • The opportunity for the Cairns Convention Centre to host events.
  • The opportunity to host sports including football and cricket.
  • Major upgrades to the Cairns Arterial Road between Redlynch Connector Road and the Captain Cook Highway.

The funding deal refines the use of the $3.435 billion in Federal funding previously committed to the Brisbane Arena, which is no longer part of the $7.1 billion Games Venue Infrastructure Program.

Deputy Premier Bleijie said the both governments would work together to deliver 17 new and upgraded venues across Queensland including the main Games stadium and National Aquatic Centre.

“The main stadium at Victoria Park will become the new, world-class, 63,000 seat home to AFL and cricket in Queensland and attract major national and international events, leaving a lasting legacy for 2032 and beyond.”

He said the Minor Venues Program had been revised and included new projects such as a National Aquatic Centre, a Toowoomba Equestrian Centre, a dedicated para-sport facility and an expanded Queensland Tennis Centre.

“These are in addition to projects with previously allocated federal funding, including the new Redland Whitewater Centre, the Anna Meares Velodrome and BMX track and Brisbane International Shooting Centre.”
