The Bundaberg Regional Council has issued an emergency alert as flooding worsens in the district, 350km north of Brisbane.
Residents have been warned that flood levels are expected to reach similar heights to the major flood event of December 2010.
“Burnett River inundation (is) possible (and) major flood levels (are) already exceeded at Walla Flood Gauge,” the alert says.
“People should move to higher ground, warn others.”
People in the area have been urged to listen to ABC radio 100.1 FM for updates.
Information is also available from Bundaberg Regional Council.
The worsening situation in Bundaberg comes as the Bureau of Meteorology continues a Flood Watch for most of Queensland.
The Bureau has also issued a strong wind warning for the Capricornia Coast, K’gari Coast, Sunshine Coast Waters and Gold Coast Waters.
The Queensland Warnings Summary can be found at bom.gov.au.
The Bureau said moderate to locally intense rainfall had been observed across parts of the Fitzroy River catchment in central Queensland over the last few days.
This had resulted in rapid river and creek level rises particularly across parts of the Dawson, Comet and Nogoa River catchments.
It issued the following advice.
Central Queensland
Major flooding is occurring along the Callide Creek. Major flooding is occurring along the Dawson River at Baralaba and is possible at Theodore Weir. Moderate flooding is possible at Taroom and Moura from Tuesday morning. Moderate flooding is likely along the Isaac River, and elevated river levels are occurring across the Nogoa and Comet River catchments.
Mary River
Heavy to locally intense rainfall has been observed across the Mary River catchment since Friday evening. Widespread moderate-major flooding is being observed at multiple locations throughout the catchment, with major flooding occurring at Tiaro, and minor flooding occurring at Maryborough where a minor flood peak is expected during Tuesday evening.
Burrum and Cherwell River
Moderate to heavy rainfall across the Burrum and Cherwell River catchments since Sunday has resulted in river and creek level rises across the catchments. Major flooding at Pacific Haven is nearing a peak. River levels at Howard peaked below the moderate flood level early Tuesday morning.
